What is an Independent Medical Evaluation (IME)? Independent means completed at arm’s length from employer and your treating practitioner. The examinations are performed by a healthcare professional who has had no other involvement in the examinee’s care to provide current impartial information. The IME physician looks at medical issues involved in your case, reviews all the medical records, documents examinee complaints and presents the findings in a straightforward written report. One of the main goals of an IME is to provide specific information necessary to resolve your case in an objective, fair and decisive manner.
Who performs the IME? The medical evaluation is performed by a third party who has had no other involvement in your care. Our physicians are leaders in their areas of specialty and have been chosen because of their expertise in your specific type of injury or affected area. Our goal is to provide private and confidential evaluations in a comfortable and supportive environment.
Who sets up the evaluation time? In most cases, the person or agency that requested the evaluation has set up the time, date, and location. This will be included in a letter sent to you. If you arrive more than fifteen minutes past your scheduled evaluation time, the physicians may be unable to see you.
Where will the evaluation take place? A map, driving directions and telephone numbers will be sent to you in confirmation letters. If you need further clarification, please call us during regular business hours at 800-808-4848.
Do I need to bring any medical records? It is the responsibility of the referring party to obtain, copy, and deliver to America’s IME available pertinent medical records. If you have recently obtained any medical records or radiographic studies (X-rays, MRIs, CTs, bone scans, myelograms, discograms, etc.) you may bring them to the exam.
Can I bring someone into the evaluation with me? If you would feel more comfortable, you may bring one person of your choosing with you into the evaluation, unless your examination involves a psychiatric review
How long is the evaluation? Most examinations last at least one hour, but some examinations can take longer depending upon the injury. Psychological examinations typically last up to four hours.
Do I need to bring anything? You will need to bring a picture ID card such as state I.D. card, drivers license or passport. Your medical records will be sent to us and reviewed by examining physicians before the examination. However, please bring in any additional X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans in your possession that relate to your condition or injury.
Who pays for the evaluation? Our office will bill the person or agency that requested your examination.
Can I get a copy of my report? For a copy of the physician's report, please speak to the person or agency that requested the evaluation. America’s IME cannot release the report directly.
